I work with hundreds of individuals and businesses worldwide who are frustrated and tired of spending so much cash on marketing and sales tools that just don't work. They buy yellow page ads, launch a website, hire a search engine optimization expert, print up flyers, cold call, attend networking events and have wasted time and money with people who can't help them. (Actually, It Was Worst) To build my client list, I attended networking events, made cold calls, did complimentary sessions and handed out flyers. Even though websites were the "in" thing in 1998, my funnel was empty. My business wasn't doing well. Slowly, I sunk deeper into debt. I maxed out on 2 credit cards to finance my web development business. I remember not wanting to answer my phone because collection agencies were calling me. I made a trip to the United States in hopes of securing more clients. When asked by the customs officer why I was going to the United States, I made the mistake of saying that it was to look for work. It didn't help that they found 20 copies of my resume stashed in my purse. My return ticket was the only thing that convinced the customs officer that I would be returning to Canada. At the beginning of 1999, things were beyond desperate. I watched my debt go up and my savings go down. I stopped meeting people for coffee because I didn't want them to waste my time. My focus was on building my business, not on idle chit chat over a hot beverage. Every time someone decided not to hire me for a contract, I typed up a frantic email asking my colleagues for help. I put together a list of what I was looking for and spammed my contacts. I remember asking one of them, a successful speaker, to give me "the crumbs from his table." He emailed me back and said, "That's pathetic, Leesa." I sent out more press releases and bought ads in newspapers. I was anxious. I was frustrated. I remember chasing a journalist for a month by phone. I got angry that he didn't return any of my phone calls. I knew how to develop webpages. I could do them in my sleep. I was smart, intelligent and I knew my stuff. Why was I having such a hard time getting clients? Why couldn't I make more money? Carolyn's business was very busy. Every week, I was introduced to a new client. I was often working 12 hours a day just to keep up. The number of employees doubled in just 6-months. I was amazed at how quickly Carolyn's company grew. Carolyn never bought any advertising. She never did any cold calling. The media called her any time they needed a quote about the Internet. Magazines and newspapers flooded the office with articles written about her company. Business was so brisk, there was a waiting list just to get a consultation. She could pick and choose who to do business with. Why did my web development company fail while Carolyn's exploded? Carolyn did what other business people were not doing in 1999. Carolyn had a blog and that blog made her famous. She is one of the first people in the world to start a blog. Her blog called Carolyn's Diary helped her make the front cover of a magazine called US News & World Report in 1997. Carolyn not only had a blog, but she also networked online. She left comments on discussion boards, formed associations and helped launch a women's network online. Taking part in the conversation on the Internet helped Carolyn promote herself and build a legion of fans. I was anxious to try out her tips. I launched a website and blog called SportsFemmes.com. In just 12-months, I was earning just over $1500 a month from banner ads. I had an active discussion board. I had 3000 opt-in emails on my list. Plus I had a blog that allowed me to share my ideas. What really felt good is that the media called me for interviews. I no longer had to chase them. I was invited to appear as a guest on a national television program. I was featured in the Sports section in one of Toronto's daily newspapers. Every week, someone emailed me about an award I received for my website. Heck, Sports Femmes was so popular, a cosmetics company sent a letter from their lawyer asking me to stop using a font in my logo. In the 3-years I ran Sports Femmes, I:
(And Very Easy to Do) You see, I promised myself a long time ago that I would never do anything to compromise my values. Using online media tools to promote myself and earn money means that I control my message. It also means that I can be authentic. Being authentic using online media tools has made me successful in many areas, for example:
You wake up, then fix some breakfast for your kids. There's no need for the school bus to pick them up. You're going to walk them to school. As you walk back home, you stop to buy a cup of your favorite coffee from your favorite store. There's a newspaper on one of the tables. You pick it up to scan the front page. You're in no hurry. Your assistant checks your voicemails and emails for you. If she needs you, you're just a cell phone call away. You continue your walk home. Oh, there's Joe, your next door neighbor. He can't talk since he's late for work. He needs every minute he can get so he can tackle the one hour commute to the office. You finally get back to your desk at around 10:30am. You check your PayPal account. Wow! You made $700 in the last 12-hours. And you were sleeping at that time. You get a call from your sister. She's worried that she can't get everyone together for the long weekend. Can you take Friday off, she asks? Shouldn't be a problem, you tell her. You take Fridays off every week. You read an email from your assistant. The Wall Street Journal called. They need an urgent quote from you. The Guardian wants to publish one of your blog posts as an article. And someone just paid for an hour's worth of your time for consultation. You're seen as an expert in your field, so you no longer need to chase anyone. Your graphic designer just sent through a design for the new product you're launching next week. You recorded a one hour speech, transcribed it and packaged it as an ebook. Time to let your list of 10,000 prospects and customers know about this new product. Should be a $5000 day. The cleaning lady has arrived. She's going to start the laundry and clean the bathrooms. You look at the clock and realize you have a very important meeting. You're off to meet your personal trainer.

I don't know about you, but I get cranky if I don't have food. Plus, eating in downtown Toronto isn't cheap. So on both days, you get a wonderful continental breakfast and catered lunch at no extra cost. Coffee, tea, muffins, pastries and orange juice are on me in the morning. Sandwiches, salad and fruit in the afternoon. A healthy menu to feed curious and healthy minds.
Two weeks after the event, I'll have a 90-minute open Q&A session by phone. You can call in and ask any remaining questions you have, or call in and listen to others' questions and successes. You’ll find this extremely valuable as some questions may "pop up" in your mind after you get back home and begin to implement my recommendations. My private consulting rate is $1000 per hour, so this is a great added value.
